Responsibility

A Drug Abuse Treatment Specialist is primarily responsible for delivering services to incarcerated individuals in an effort to help them overcome substance use problems.  He/she will provide direct services within residential and non-residential substance use treatment programs in a correctional facility.  He/she conducts group and individual counseling, instructs drug education classes, develops treatment plans, applies assessment and treatment techniques, and develops discharge reports and follow-up treatment plans for inmates who are releasing to the community.

Experience Required

A Drug Abuse Treatment Specialist must have the ability to provide counseling in either a group or individual setting. He/she must have experiencing learning and applying new assessment and treatment techniques and use these techniques to develop rapport and advance treatment goals during counseling. During group counseling, he/she is required to simultaneously monitor the behavior of participants and facilitate the group process. He/she must understand the nature of addiction to effectively plan and implement treatment for participants. Additionally, he/she must possess knowledge of the concepts, principles, theories and social problems associated with addiction. KCL are looking to appoint an enthusiastic post-doctoral Research Associate to work on an exciting, international, research study of take home naloxone. This is a mixed-methods study of the effectiveness of take home naloxone administration by lay people in reversing opioid overdose. The study aims to determine a) the rate of naloxone administration with the intention of reversing an opioid overdose by lay persons provided with THN who witness an opioid overdose and b) the frequency of deaths in the 24 hours subsequent to administration of naloxone. The post is fixed term for two years. 

Even though the study is funded by MundiPharma Research Ltd (the pharmaceutical company responsible for manufacturing the nasal naloxone, Nyxoid), the study examines any/all forms of naloxone which participating clinical services provide. The study is being undertaken in England, Wales, Scotland, Denmark and Sweden (and other countries, to be confirmed). The post holder will be located in the Addictions Department at the IoPPN, King’s College London.

A cohort of 6000 individuals having been pre-supplied with naloxone will be followed up over six months to determine whether they have witnessed (or experienced) an overdose. Those that have will be asked to take part in an interview with a researcher to ask them to provide more details about the overdose event. 

The position will involve assisting with every aspect of this study including:

liaising with countries to ensure recruitment of country sites and participants and adherence to protocol, ensuring countries have the training and resources they need; management and reporting of serious adverse events and assisting with data analysis and report writing, maintaining up to date study files and databases, and undertaking research interviews over the telephone and data entry for participants recruited in London.

The Overdose Response Strategy (ORS) is an initiative designed to enhance public health-public safety collaboration and strengthen efforts to reduce drug overdose deaths. The ORS is funded by CDC and the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) to help communities reduce fatal and non-fatal drug overdose rates by improved information sharing across public health and public safety agencies, and by supporting evidence-based intervention. 

As of July 2021, there are ORS Public Health Analyst (PHA) and Drug Intelligence Officer (DIO) positions in 50 states, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. PHA positions are funded by CDC through the CDC Foundation and DIO positions are funded by ONDCP through the High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA) program. These state teams form the foundation of the ORS and work to promote overdose prevention and response efforts, and increase communication, data flow, and intelligence sharing between public safety and public health within and across ORS states.  

The CDC Foundation seeks candidates for a full-time PHA to support the ORS. This position will support efforts of the U.S. Virgin Island Department of Health, Puerto Rico/Virgin Islands HIDTA, and other key partners in the development and implementation of drug overdose information sharing systems and evidence-based prevention programs.

The VA Ann Arbor is a level 1B high complexity facility with a strong academic affiliate partner in the University of Michigan. The VA Ann Arbor serves over 60,000 veterans annually with 6 community-based outpatient clinics and 2 local offsite clinics serving Southeast Michigan and Northwest Ohio. The Mental Health Service consists of about 30 clinical teams and an 18 bed acute inpatient mental Health unit. The service sees about 13,000 uniques per year with 150,000 encounters. In addition to our clinical mission, the VAAAHS has a strong tradition of training tomorrow's healthcare providers. The Mental Health Service houses strong training programs with about 30 Psychology trainees from undergraduate trough postdoctoral study, Psychiatry residents and fellows, medical students, and social work and nurse practitioner trainees. Qualifications

BASIC REQUIREMENTS

a. Citizenship. Be a citizen of the United States.

b. Education

(1) Have a doctoral degree in psychology from a graduate program in psychology accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA), the Psychological Clinical Science Accreditation System (PCSAS), or the Canadian Psychological Association (CPA) at the time the program was completed. The specialty area of the degree must be consistent with the assignment for which the applicant is to be employed. For the purpose of meeting this requirement, the term "specialty area" refers to the specific specialty areas recognized by the accrediting body and not to specific job duties that might require special skills. Currently, APA accredits doctoral programs in the specialty areas of clinical psychology, counseling psychology, school psychology, or combinations of two or more of those areas. PCSAS accredits doctoral programs in psychological clinical science. CPA accredits doctoral programs in clinical psychology, counseling psychology, clinical neuropsychology, and school psychology. There are no job assignments in VHA that require the skills of a school psychologist; therefore, an applicant with a degree in the specialty area of school psychology is not eligible for appointment. Strictly for the purpose of determining eligibility for appointment as a psychologist in VHA, there is no distinction between the specialty areas (with the exception of school psychology). c. Licensure. Hold a full, current, and unrestricted license to practice psychology at the doctoral level in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or the District of Columbia.

d. Board Certification

(1) Board Certification. Persons hired to psychology positions in the VHA who completed an internship that was not accredited at the time the program was completed must be board certified by the American Board of Professional Psychology in a specialty area that is consistent with the assignment for which the applicant is to be employed. The board certificate must be current and the applicant must abide by the certifying body's requirement for continuing education.

e. English Language Proficiency. Psychologists must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with VA Handbook 5005.
 

Duties

This position is located in Psychiatry Service, Substance Use Disorders Clinic, Northport VA Medical Center. The Psychiatrist will provide comprehensive psychiatric care consisting of assessment and evaluation, diagnosis, development, and coordination of aftercare services. The Northport Veterans Affairs Medical Center is always improving the health of the men and women who have proudly served our nation and mental health plays a critical role.

• Coordinates the development of multidisciplinary treatment plan.
• Plans and implements discharge planning for patients.
• Performs clinical functions appropriate to credentials, training and experience.
• Consultation with other physicians and physicians' assistants or nurse practitioners, assesses the medical condition of the patient in the context of his/her psychiatric condition.
• Addresses the unique characteristics and issues about the young adult (18-39), middle adult (40-64), older adult (65-80) and geriatric (80+) patients, taking into consideration cognitive deficits and emotional and behavioral reactions to stressful life events such as ill health, economic problems, and the loss of significant others. In addition, demonstrates an awareness of the physical, social, economic and environmental challenges of those who suffer from chemical dependency.

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Basic Requirements:

• United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
• Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
• Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
• Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR
  [(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR
  (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences.
  Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs.
• Proficiency in spoken and written English.

Additional Requirement: ABPN Board Certified/ Eligible in Psychiatry.

Experience and Qualifications

• A minimum of two (2) years post-graduate relevant supervised clinical experience in the field of substance use disorder treatment is required.
• Experience with assessment, diagnosis, crisis intervention, individual and group psychotherapy/psychoeducation, and individualized treatment planning for adults with substance use disorders.
• Experience assessing, diagnosing, and treating a broad range of psychiatric conditions is preferred.
• Must be familiar with DSM-V as a means of diagnosis.

Education

• Master's Degree in Social Work, Psychology, Sociology, or other field related to behavioral health. Please Note: in accordance with our compliance requirements, all Lionrock counselors must have obtained their Master’s degree prior to obtaining state licensure.

Licensure

• License to practice independently without supervision in the state of licensure. MUST Hold an LCSW, LMFT, LMHC, LPC, or similar type of state licensure.

Competencies

• Ability to accurately assess, diagnose and create individualized treatment plans for an adult SUD population.
• Deliver treatment to an adult substance abuse disordered (SUD) population utilizing Evidence-Based SUD Practices.
• Ability to conduct individual and group psychotherapy sessions using evidence-based SUD practices.
• Ability to deliver psychoeducational materials in a group setting that relate to overall health, mental health, and recovery from substance use disorders.
• Familiarity with medical and pharmacological resources
• Ability to deliver culturally appropriate treatment strategies that demonstrate an understanding of diversity and utilize the client’s resources.
• Knowledge of regulations for documentation and the ability to write comprehensive, accurate, and concise notes that record clients’ progress towards treatment goals.
• Demonstrate the professional maturity and ethical integrity necessary for assuming professional responsibilities and working independently in a web-based treatment program.
• Demonstrate commitment to quality of service, teamwork, and participation in a web-based treatment program.
• Ability to complete multiple tasks/objectives in a timely manner.
• Knowledge of social service agencies, state regulations, and professional standards as they relate to client treatment, patient rights, and client/patient confidentiality.
