Thern, E., Ramstedt, M., and Svensson, J. ( 2019) Long‐term effects of youth unemployment on alcohol‐related morbidity. Addiction, https://doi.org/10.1111/add.14838.

Youth unemployment has remained stable at a high-level in many countries over the past several decades.

Over the same period, evidence has emerged which suggests that unemployment can negatively affect an individual’s mental and physical health.

This, in turn, makes unemployment a significant public health issue.

Previous studies have shown the relationship between unemployment and alcohol use, in particular, to be a complex one, suggesting the former to be both a consequence and a cause of the latter.

In an effort to enhance our understanding of this relationship, a new Swedish-based...

Abstract

Substance abuse is a significant problem in Pakistan (Hussain, 2017), yet, there are few studies of risk factors in this population, particularly in remote areas. Male adolescents (N = 243; M = 16.9 years, SD = 1.3 years) were recruited from schools in Gilgit‐Baltistan, and completed questions on demographics, substance use, and psychosocial functioning. As a Muslim country, there are strict prohibitions against alcohol use, yet 44.9% of the sample reported lifetime alcohol use. The Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (Babor, Higgins‐Biddle, Saunders, & Monteiro, 2001), was...

Bhutan is recognised for its development philosophy of Gross National Happiness, which places the well-being of people above gross domestic product. However, over the last few years, the number of patients with mental disorder seeking help from the health care system has grown significantly throughout the country.

Growing drug- and alcohol-related mental health problems are having a clear impact on Bhutan. Policy makers and other professionals claim Bhutan is not progressing at the same speed as the rest of the world and that lack of modernisation, which is leading to limited opportunities...

In terms of global alcohol consumption, Russia has been consistently considered one of the countries with the highest track record of heavy drinking.

However, recent figure have found Russian alcohol consumption has decreased by 43% from 2003 to 2016, according to a report published by the WHO.

Some explanations as to this positive downward trend include the introduction advertising restrictions, increased taxes on alcohol, a ban on alcohol sales between certain hours, and banned street drinking.

It is recognised that harmful alcohol consumption is more common amongst those who have served in the UK armed forces.

However this is not just an issue for the individual who has served in the army. In a recent study conducted by researchers at Kings College London, they found that alcohol is also an increased problem amongst female spouses and partners of military personnel.

The researchers found that female spouses and partners of military personnel were more likely to describe symptoms of depression and to report binge-drinking than women in the general population.

Further research is...

Addiction: 2016, 111(11), p. 1935-1945.

Could combinations of three strategies - training and support, financial reimbursement, and the opportunity to refer patients to a website - effectively(link is external) and cost-effectively(link is external) boost delivery of brief alcohol interventions in five European countries, including England? The aim was to find the best way to narrow the gap in primary care between the number of patients who could benefit from these interventions and those who receive them. An important trial whose findings we analyse in depth, and for which we have updated our analysis of the cost-effectiveness findings.

The prevalence of binge drinking- the consumption of an excessive amount of alcohol in a short period of time- is increasing across Asia.

Previous research has shown revealed links between heavy drinking and poor mental health outcomes. However, there is a lack of research exploring this association in populations in Asia.

In a recent study, published in the journal of Addictive behaviours, researchers have the past-year prevalence of binge drinking in Singapore and its associations with socio-demographic factors, mental health conditions and quality of life.

Focus on Youth Football and Alcohol is a joint initiative aiming to reduce underage drinking and heavy episodic drinking among young people, as both strongly affect the health and welfare of Europe’s population.

The evidence highlights that there are links between increased exposure to alcohol advertising and higher levels of drinking by young people.

A key point made throughout and supported in this study is that sport can and does help promote healthy lifestyles, including supporting activities to prevent and reduce alcohol-related harms.
