Researchers predict that harm from substance use and rates of substance use disorders in sub-Saharan Africa will increase significantly in the next 30 years.

In order to have a well-functioning health system that works in harmony, the World Health Organization (WHO)describes the need for the following features:

  • trained and motivated health workers,
  • a well-maintained infrastructure
  • a reliable supply of medicines and technologies,

The UNODC Kenya mentor has participated at the webinar on the impact of COVID-19 pandemic and Substance Use Disorders in Kenya on Friday, 15 May 2020. Together with Hussein Manji, Public Health Consultant at UNODC ROEA, the mentor outlines UNODC's support in the COVID-19 response among the most vulnerable groups, such as people who use drugs and who are affected by substance use disorders, people living with HIV and people living in prisons.

One area of substance misuse among adolescents that is currently a problem, and has not been fully understood in the Nigerian context is the attitudes of adolescents towards cough syrup abuse. Thus, to inform policy actions for reducing cough syrup abuse among Nigerian adolescents, this study explored the attitudes of adolescents towards cough syrup abuse in two Southwest states of Nigeria, where substance abuse is rampant.

Thay mặt ISSUP Kenya, tôi đã trình bày bản ghi nhớ của chúng tôi cho Lực lượng đặc nhiệm sức khỏe tâm thần của Bộ Y tế. Lực lượng đặc nhiệm,  được thành lập theo chỉ thị nội các do Tổng thống Cộng hòa Kenya chủ trì, tìm cách thu thập quan điểm của công chúng về những thách thức và giải pháp về tình trạng sức khỏe tâm thần trong nước. Là một cơ quan chuyên nghiệp, chúng tôi ủng hộ việc các rối loạn sử dụng chất kích thích được coi là một vấn đề sức khỏe tâm thần chứ không chỉ là vấn đề an ninh hay đạo đức .
