On December 15, the United States National Institute on Drug Abuse announced new data from the annual Monitoring the Future study led by researchers at the University of Michigan.

On December 16, a data processing error was found. This error misrepresented the scope of the decreases in daily or near-daily vaping of nicotine, marijuana, and just flavoring. NIDA’s materials were updated on December 17 to reflect the correct data.

The current article provides a summary of biopsychosocial gender differences in alcohol use disorder (AUD), then reviews existing literature on gender differences in treatment access, retention, outcomes, and longer-term recovery. Among psychotherapies for AUD, there is support for the efficacy of providing female-specific treatment and for female-only treatment settings, but only when female-specific treatment is included. The goal of treatment for opioid addiction or opioid use disorder (OUD) is remission of the disorder leading to lasting recovery.

Recovery is a process of change through which individuals improve their health and wellness, live self-directed lives, and strive to reach their full potential. 

This Treatment Improvement Protocol (TIP) reviews the use of the three Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved medications used to treat OUD—methadone, naltrexone, and buprenorphine—and the other strategies and services needed to support recovery for people with OUD.
