The Collaborative Hub for Emerging Adult Recovery Research (CHEARR) at the UConn Health School of Medicine is recruiting a postdoctoral fellow interested in a career conducting research on recovery support services for emerging adults with substance use disorders. The fellow will work directly under the mentorship of Dr. Kristyn Zajac, with opportunities for external mentorship from researchers at Chestnut Health Systems, East Tennessee State University, and the University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School. Fellowships are 1-2 years depending on training needs. The fellow will primarily work on a NIDA-funded Initiative (the Collaborative Hub for Emerging Adult Recovery Research [CHEARR], R24DA057632) focused on recovery supports for emerging adults with opioid use disorder. CHEARR seeks to advance research on the efficacy/effectiveness of recovery support services, particularly continuing care models, for emerging adults who take or who have taken medications for opioid use disorder. We use a community-based participatory approach, which means persons with lived experience with opioid use disorder, and particularly with taking medications for opioid use disorder as part of their recovery process, are an integral part of the research team. As such, recruiting postdoctoral fellowship applicants with lived experiences (i.e., in recovery from substance use and/or personal experience with familial substance use problems) is a high priority for CHEARR.

Beyond CHEARR activities, integration into other projects will be based on the fellow’s interests and training needs. There are currently multiple NIH-funded studies that employ various research designs and methods, including randomized controlled trials, stepped-wedge cluster randomized trials, multimodal assessments of risk factors for substance use treatment dropout, mHealth intervention development and evaluation, working with community boards who partner on research, and data from legal system-related studies, among others. There are also data from multiple NIH-funded randomized clinical trials focused on treatment of substance use problems available for secondary analysis.

Role of the Postdoctoral Fellow:

As an essential member of the investigative team, you will…

  • Conduct advanced grant-funded research (e.g., plan data collection and advanced statistical analysis, ensure fidelity of intervention implementation and community partner engagement, develop training curricula and supervise intervention implementation, collaborate with a project coordinator on project-related tasks, assist in training and supervising data collection staff, assist with dissemination of research results)
  • Pursue extramural funding (e.g., NIH K-series award or diversity supplement) and attend trainings designed to launch your own independently funded research career
  • Serve as primary author or co-author for journal articles and chapters for publication
  • Write or assist with writing grant progress reports and new grant applications
  • Attend professional conferences for continuing education and to present study results

About us

The Addictions Department, also known as the National Addiction Centre (NAC), is one of the most productive addictions research groups in Europe. We represent an important area of health-related study as the Addictions Clinical Academic Group (CAG) within King’s Health Partners, and form one of the core areas of the Academic Health Science Centre that brings together university partners King’s College London with the NHS from South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust, King’s College Hospital and Guy’s and St Thomas’. RAND Europe rated our work on Substance Abuse Research as leading in the field.

The Addictions department at King’s College London is based at Denmark Hill in London, but for this role, the appointed person would be based at the University of Hull. However, the role involves closely working with team members based in London.

www.hull.ac.uk/work-with-us/research/groups/centre-for-addiction-and-mental-health-research

About the role

We would like to appoint a Research Assistant to play a key role within a newly NIHR funded project. The research focuses on the development, evaluation and testing of a Virtual Reality-enhanced Cue Exposure Treatment integrated with a wearable device to address craving, prevent relapse and improve treatment outcomes of people with cocaine dependence.

A key challenge in helping people to recover from cocaine addiction (or dependence) is their craving for the drug that can be triggered by ‘cues’ in their environment, such as situations or objects, which remind them of the pleasurable effects of cocaine. This process is known as ‘classical conditioning’ and the aim of this study is to reduce the risk of relapse to cocaine through use of novel technologies to reduce craving.

What we plan to study

Cocaine craving, and relapse to cocaine use are associated with physical changes to the body that can be measured. We are planning to ask individuals to wear a novel watch-like device that can measures physical changes to cues in their everyday environment. With this technology we will be able to identify in real time when they experience an episode of craving or start using cocaine again, to understand what real-life situations or circumstances have triggered these events, and allow us to provide support remotely when we detect they encounter situations that increase their risk of relapse. We will test the ability of technology-enhanced CET to reduce craving and relapse to cocaine use, compared to people receiving usual care

This research is a collaboration involving five UK universities led from the Addictions Department at King’s College London (KCL), the University of Kent, Centre for Addiction and Mental Health at the University of Hull, University of Birmingham, and University of Southampton.

The person appointed will be employed by the Addictions Department at King’s College London (KCL) and will report to Professor Paolo Deluca (Lead applicant) but will be based at the University of Hull and work closely with Professor Tom Phillips. The person appointed will also be working closely with the Project Manger Dr Eileen Brobbin, who is based at King’s College London but will also involve in person meetings between Eileen and the appointed person for training.

The successful candidate will have a good understanding of addictive behaviours, experience in conducting quantitative and qualitative research in clinical settings, and data collection and recruitment. Having conducted research using wearable devices and/or virtual reality will be an asset.

You will also have established research skills relevant to this work. You should be a clear and balanced communicator and committed to equality, diversity and inclusion principles. The successful appointee will be expected to be reliable and efficient and also to have good inter-personal as well as organisational skills.

This is a full-time post and you will be offered a fixed term contract of two years.

The Institute also hosts an NIHR Biomedical Research Centre for Mental Health and an NIHR Dementia Unit, as well as the MRC Social, Genetic and Developmental Psychiatry Research Centre.

The IoPPN offers a range of Diploma, BSc, MSc, MPhil, and PhD courses in psychiatry, psychology and related basic and clinical neurosciences.

The Department of SGDP

The Social, Genetic and Developmental Psychiatry Centre, based at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience in London, is the only centre of its kind in the world. It is a lively and interesting place to work with a friendly environment.

The goal of the Centre is to investigate the effects of ‘nature’ (genetics) and ‘nurture’ (environment) as they interact and as people grow up. New and exciting collaborative and interdisciplinary research and training are the hallmarks of the Centre. Research (for instance using twin studies or molecular genetics) is central to our theme and, properly applied, can tell us as much about the environment as about genetics. The Centre gives a high priority to its PhD students who have typically been of very high quality and who will be the outstanding scientists and doctors of the future. The Centre also provides training at its annual Summer School and exceptional research training for clinicians due to the critical mass of interdisciplinary expertise gathered under one roof. The Centre’s research furthers mankind’s understanding of the root causes of common problems such as anxiety, depression, autism, disruptive behaviour or intellectual impairment. The Centre’s aim is to be able to trace pathways between genes and behaviours at all levels of analysis from cells to social systems. Ultimately the Centre’s unique contribution will be in discovering both new treatments and ways to prevent illnesses occurring in the first place.

About The Role

We are looking for a postdoctoral researcher to cover maternity leave within Inherit Lab, a group of researchers focussed on the genetically informed study of the intergenerational transmission of mental health problems. https://www.kcl.ac.uk/research/inherit-lab

In Inherit Lab we are interested in understanding mental health in families. We study large family databases to understand the role of genetic and environmental factors in the intergenerational continuity of mental health problems and associated traits. Our approach to research incorporates methodological techniques from the fields of quantitative genetics, causal inference, epidemiology and more. We are seeking a postdoctoral researcher with relevant experience in quantitative/behavioural genetics, epidemiology, statistics, or other quantitative mental health research.

The successful candidate will have three roles: research, leadership of the Family Footsteps public involvement and engagement project, and some teaching responsibilities.

  • Research will be conducted under the supervision of Dr Tom McAdams. You will use data from the Norwegian Mother Father and Child Birth Cohort Study (>90k families followed from pregnancy through child development), the Twins Early Development Study (10k twin pairs followed from birth to adulthood). These datasets comprise extended families and include mental health data and DNA on parents and children. Research projects will focus on mental health in families (parent-child effects) and will involve one or more of the following:

o   Gene-environment interaction: Genetically mediated sensitivity to environmental stressors.

o   The impact of treatment (for ADHD in children/depression in parents) on the untreated family members.

o   Selection bias: identifying the biases associated with selective participation/attrition in cohort studies and how we can correct for them.

  • Family Footsteps is a public involvement and engagement project focussed on creating dialogue between parents with an interest in mental health and mental health researchers. Consultation workshops have taken place over the last year. Next steps will be creating and running an online survey and engaging in dissemination of our findings in collaboration with charity partners. The successful candidate will lead on this. More information can be found here: https://www.kcl.ac.uk/research/family-footsteps
  • Teaching responsibilities will involve assisting Dr McAdams to run an MSc module. This will involve running several research methods practical sessions and providing some lectures.

This is a full-time post (35 Hours per week), and you will be offered a fixed term contract until October 2025. Part-time applicants will be considered (no less than 50% FTE). A contract extension beyond the period of maternity cover is possible.

Research Associate - University of Glasgow

Shared by Olivia Woodrow - 25 October 2024
Job deadline

We have an exciting opportunity for a Research Associate to join the School of Molecular Biosciences.

This post, funded by the Wellcome Trust is to investigate mechanisms that can prevent opioid misuse and opioid-use-disorder and hence have a major impact on the global opioid crisis. In exciting breakthrough studies, we have discovered that inhibition of the M5 muscarinic acetylcholine receptor (M5-receptor) can prevent opioid drug seeking and reduce cue-induced relapse. The implications of our findings are huge. They indicate that by co-administration of a drug that inhibits the M5-receptor with opioid analgesics we can reduce the likelihood of patients becoming addicted to opioids and for those patients in remission from opioid addiction we can reduce the likelihood of relapse.

This project will work in close collaboration with leading in vivo pharmacologist Professor Carrie Jones, Vanderbilt University, Nashville USA, to understand fundamental aspects of M5-receptor biology and optimise ligands that can modulate M5-receptor activity to reduce the risk of opioid-addiction whilst retaining the drug’s analgesic properties. As part of a multi-disciplinary team, you will generate novel genetically engineered mice that will be used in combination with unique tool ligands in conjunction with anatomical, behavioural and molecular biology-based studies to explore how M5-receptors regulate reward-seek pathways associated with drug-addiction and validate the potential of this G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) as a therapeutic target.

This is an opportunity for a highly motivated Research Scientist to conduct basic research with potential for pre-clinical translation. The candidate will be responsible for mapping the neuroanatomy of M5-receptor in the brain, pharmacological characterisation and in vitro and in vivo testing of novel agonists/ antagonists to M5-receptor and pre-clinical addiction studies to validate the M5-receptor as a target in the treatment of addiction. The candidate will be based at University of Glasgow in state-of-the-art laboratories located in the newly built Advanced Research Centre (ARC) in the heart of the University campus and have the opportunity to spend time in our collaborator’s lab in Nashville, Tennessee.
