Assessment and Treatment of Substance Use Disorders in Jails. In Handbook of Mental Health Assessment and Treatment in Jails.

Abstract

The high rates of substance use in the incarcerated population are well established. However, the effective management and treatment of substance use disorders in jails can be complicated by a number of factors. This chapter first reviews best practices for jail settings and examines existing evidence on the implementation and utilization of these programs and strategies. Specific attention is given to screening and assessment, management of acute intoxication, detoxification services, medication-assisted treatment, and psychosocial interventions. The chapter then summarizes several challenges to delivering jail-based substance use disorder services and highlights some important considerations for practitioners. Recommendations for policy and practice are also presented.
