Abstract:
Quality Matters: Transforming the Future of Drug Use Disorder Treatment
The global gap in the treatment of drug use disorders continues to be widened, with only one in twelve people having access. Despite clear evidence that effective treatment for drug use disorders is both life-saving and cost-effective, the availability and quality remain limited worldwide.
In response, the International Standards for the Treatment of Drug Use Disorders (2020) was developed to support UN Member States to develop and strengthen effective, ethical, and rights-based treatment systems and comprehensive, tailored services targeting the different needs of people with drug use disorders. In the efforts to disseminate The Standards, UNODC developed Quality Assurance (QA) mechanisms for the treatment of drug use disorders tailored for treatment systems and services. These tools aim to introduce a continuous cycle of improvement and enhance service delivery through structured assessments, technical assistance, and system-wide improvements.
This presentation will build on Indonesia’s experience in applying quality assurance mechanisms while highlighting key lessons learned, successes, and challenges, offering insights for other countries aiming to strengthen the quality and effectiveness of their drug use disorder treatment systems.
